The word ‘occupation’ in occupational therapy actually has very little to do with ‘profession’ or ‘job’ that enables a person to earn his or her income. This word basically refers to how a person keeps himself ‘occupied’ throughout the span of the 24 hours that he gets in a day. Usually a person utilizes time in three activities which can be named as personal care, work and free time / leisure. Whatever activity a person engages himself with has to fall under any one of these three categories keeping the person usefully occupied throughout the day.
However, there can be circumstances due to physical or mental inability, when a person cannot keep himself occupied productively. This can happen to anybody, where these people may belong to any age group, nevertheless, it is usually the elderly and the aged who require such help. This group of people can become victim to many disabling diseases and general deterioration of physical and mental condition that may require intervention through ‘occupational’ therapy. However, many children who were born with birth defects (mental and physical) or, may have developed disabling conditions during their childhood, can do well with occupational therapy as well.
